I first posted an article on treating dry hands back in March this year. You can read it here It’s been 6 long months since that post and I have learned much since then. I have expanded my knowledge base immensely been. The interesting thing is that I have been able to apply most of the new information directly to change my own lifestyle. I can confirm without doubt that theory can become practice. Physically my skin has never felt better and my hands almost look like a direct replacement of the old ones. That is how dramatic the results can be when you practice the rules of a healthy skin. Let me describe exactly what I did and also give a few of the things I learned along the way to.
What I did
1) I decided I needed to look for a solution
Sometimes when you have a problem looking for a solution can seems even worse than the problem itself especially if you have no idea where to begin. It can be laziness or simply a lack of time to address the problem squarely. Most people would actually say it is not such a big deal and they can very well carry on with life the way it is. In my case, I decided to practice what I preach. I made up my mind to find a solution. That is the first step to solving the problem.
2) I decided to invest more time & effort
I did a stocktaking of my skin condition. I took inventory of all my complaints. With this inventory at the back of my mind, I went shopping for right product(s) that could deliver the results I wanted. As you can imagine it was a lot of effort to take time out to go online searching for information. I did it and I am enjoying the fruits of that labour big time.
3) I decided to spend more money and upgrade
Next thing I did was to discard my love for the random toilet soap. I have never been someone to spend more than a minute pondering what soap to buy or use. I usually end up with something like Lux or Joy soap. Let me state here that these products are beauty care’s version of “one size fits all” They are to be used only as a last resort. They simply lack the basic qualities to provide your skin with all round good health. A good soap (bar or liquid) must have germ killers or anti-microbial, antioxidants and moisturizing or humectant (moisture retention) properties at the very least. Some products take it a step further with skin lightening and exfoliating ingredients. Toilet soaps like Joy and Lux are almost useless when it comes to cleansing and protecting the skin. However, these mass-market products are so cheap that consumers can hardly resist the urge to buy them. The thick lather these products provide is also an attempt to create the illusion of being clean. My upgrade process ended up with me buying Neutrogena Body Scrub, Neutrogena Exfoliating Facial bar and Dettol soap. I supported this selection with Olay Quench Light Moisture Lotion and coconut oil for my hair. As you can see I was not take my upgrade lightly. Good products cost money and this time it was worth it.
4) I decided to stay focused and to follow through
Having committed time and money to the process, I had no choice than to ensure that I used the products consistently. At first, the changes were not so noticeable but slowly and surely I began to observe definite changes in my condition. The facial spots, pimples and shaving bumps of the past began to reduce and to final become rare occurrences. I would still get it from time to time but even then the effects would be mild and brief. After the first month my skin condition was so physically different as to become noticeable to family and friends.
What I learned
1) It not about the money
Although good beauty care and toiletries can be expensive often, the difference is not quite as mind boggling as one would expected. In the end too, it seems a small price to pay for the comfort, the head expanding self-confidence, and the over-all peace of mind
2) It’s good to have a strategy
It is necessary to know the basics. You can get this by asking an expert or by doing your own research. This enables you to outline a plan of action that will determine exactly how you intend to go about reaching your goal. Next step is follow-up…follow-up…follow-up…measurement. Keep an eye out for improvements and stay consistent.
3) Skin issues can affect the whole body
Somewhere during this process I discovered that my dry palms were simply a result of my poor overall skin health. I had always suffered perpetually from oily skin, acne, shaving pumps and ingrown hairs. I would often feel itching on my legs and my forehead and forearms always had a wrinkled look. Of course, my palm were always rough scaly and dry. I wrongly assumed this was natural. As soon as I started my new treatment, all these other worrying conditions appeared to vanish.
4) It’s possible to have trouble free skin
I never thought I would ever have trouble free skin but I am happy to announce that I seem to be heading in that direction. I no longer worry about my oily skin or dry hands. My skin looks smoother, clearer, and more nourished than ever before
5) It takes patience
I need to mention that this result did not happen overnight. In fact, I started seeing the first signs of my improved condition about a month after I had started. Note that this depends on individual skin conditions and the type of products used. It will generally differ from person to person even among members of the a family
The Results
Today my hands have never felt so soft. In fact they even
look different. My palms look smoother and the skin colour appears of a shade lighter
than before. Whenever I apply moisturizer to my palms it actually feels like the
skin absorbs it much better than before. I am completely satisfied with the
result. Whats so awesome is that I think its going to get even better as time
goes on.
