Alternatives to Hydroquinone

We have posted a couple of articles explaining in simple terms how Hydroquinone works. This is needed to change the general conversation and dispel many myths surrounding it. Hydroquinone remains the number one choice of dermatologists and a large percentage of our population continues to use it. Accurate information on these ingredients remains a critical need.

What Is Licorice?

This time we look at another remarkable alternative to hydroquinone in Licorice root extract. Licorice (or Liquorice) appears in cosmetics products as Glycyrrhiza Glabra root extract. It is derived from a plant that is native to parts of Europe and Asia. Here we are not talking about the sweet chewy candy with a distinct flavour that everyone knows.

Licorice is a very effective skin-lightening agent. It is much more effective than hydroquinone in treating skin problems related to skin color. It can achieve this because it contains several powerful substances including Glycyrrhetinic acid, Glabridin, and Liquitrin among others. Licorice extract is effective in three ways:

1) It effectively lightens the skin

It achieves this in a way similar to hydroquinone by inhibiting tyrosinase. Tyrosinase plays an important role in the production of skin pigment (melanin). Without, it the skin becomes lighter in color over time.

2) It is effective in reducing inflammation and irritation

Licorice also acts like corticosteroid creams (such as hydrocortisone). It soothes the skin and reduces inflammation, redness, and irritations which can lead to severe discomfort.

3) It protects the skin against UVB radiation from the sun

Unlike hydroquinone and other agents used for skin lightening its use does not lead to skin photo-sensitivity to UVB radiation. This means it will not cause the skin to darken when exposed to sunlight However there is always a need to be protected, avoid the sun, and use broad-spectrum necessary precautions should be taken to avoid sun exposure.

4) It promotes overall good skin health

Licorice is a powerful antioxidant. It protects the skin from environmental impurities called free radicals. In addition, it helps encourage the natural production of collagen which helps the skin stay firm and robust.

What To Avoid When Using Licorice

Always protect your skin from harsh sunlight whenever you go outdoors. This is even more important when you use products that contain ingredients like licorice that remove spots and blemishes. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF50 or higher. Apply it regularly and generously especially when you are outdoors. Use your product as directed by its manufacturer.

Apart from sun damage, the other risk with licorice is allergic skin reactions. If this should occur discontinue the product immediately. Also, avoid using licorice excessively. Avoid using licorice in combination with retinol or hydroquinone as it doesn't blend well with them and can cause irritation. However, all factors considered, licorice remains a very economical, safe, and effective alternative to traditional treatments such as hydroquinone.
